UAB Health System Invests in Future of Healthcare with EPIC EHR

November 2024

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has approved a pivotal decision to transition the UAB Health System to the EPIC electronic health record (EHR) platform. This strategic move, effective September 25, 2024, is poised to revolutionize operational efficiency, streamline patient care, and solidify the system's position in the dynamic healthcare landscape.

UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella, who also serves as CEO of the UAB Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance, underscored the significance of this transition. She emphasized that the adoption of EPIC will yield substantial benefits, including cost savings, optimized scale, and streamlined operations. These advantages will ultimately redound to the benefit of both patients and healthcare professionals.

By integrating disparate systems, the new EHR will facilitate the seamless transfer of patient records across UAB Health System entities, including the forthcoming acquisition of St. Vincent’s. This unified approach will streamline processes for healthcare providers, administrators, and support staff, ensuring that patient medical information remains readily accessible regardless of the treatment location. Furthermore, the platform will enhance scheduling capabilities and other operational aspects.

The comprehensive implementation of EPIC, coupled with in-depth training for all employees, is projected to be completed within two and a half years. As the implementation timeline solidifies, detailed information and updates will be disseminated to employees, tailored to their specific roles and responsibilities. This proactive approach will ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruptions to daily operations.

The UA System Board of Trustees has allocated approximately $380 million to fund the project, covering implementation costs, certain labor components, and operational expenses for a seven-year period. This significant investment underscores the UAB Health System's unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, efficient healthcare services to the people of Alabama.

By embracing cutting-edge technology and investing in its workforce, the UAB Health System is poised to elevate the standard of patient care, enhance operational efficiency, and solidify its position as a leading healthcare provider in the region.
