Survey Reveals Nurses' Perspectives on Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

April 2024

Cross Country Healthcare, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCRN), in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, has unveiled the findings of its fourth annual Future of Nursing Survey titled "Embracing Technology While Preserving Humanity." The survey, based on insights from over 1,100 nursing professionals and students, delves into the complex relationship between cutting-edge healthcare technologies and the enduring essence of compassionate care.

The survey findings reveal a nuanced perspective among nurses regarding the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with over half expressing reservations and 38% questioning its potential benefits for the nursing field. While some acknowledge AI's capacity to enhance efficiency, documentation, research, skill development, and patient monitoring, concerns persist regarding its perceived lack of empathy, job displacement risks, data security, regulatory complexities, and the learning curve associated with new technology.

John A. Martins, president and CEO of Cross Country, emphasized the importance of striking a delicate balance between embracing technology and preserving the humanity inherent in nursing. He stated, "As we navigate the future of nursing, our compass must be set on a dual course: embracing technology to propel us forward while steadfastly preserving the humanity at the core of our profession."

The survey also sheds light on nurses' mental well-being, highlighting concerns about staffing shortages and burnout. Despite the potential of telehealth services, a significant portion of nurses (74%) have never utilized them, citing doubts about their efficacy in delivering comprehensive patient care. Additionally, a notable percentage of both employed (29%) and student nurses (41%) contemplate retirement or transitioning out of the profession in the near future. To address these challenges, 96% of nurses advocate for increased pay rates and incentives to attract and retain nursing talent.

Safiya George, Ph.D., the Holli Rockwell Trubinsky Eminent Dean and Professor at FAU Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, emphasized the importance of preparing future nurses to embrace technology while upholding the values of empathy and compassion. She stated, "Nothing will replace the human touch, empathy, and compassion that is at the core of the nursing profession."

Cross Country Healthcare recommends four strategies for healthcare organizations to empower nurses in adopting AI:

  1. Transparency: Ensure nurses understand AI's impact and benefits through transparent communication.
  2. Training: Implement comprehensive training programs customized for nurses to enhance proficiency in AI-powered tools.
  3. Communication: Customize communication strategies to address nurses' concerns and promote AI acceptance.
  4. Feedback: Solicit and integrate nurses’ feedback into AI solutions to improve the nursing experience.

In 2021, FAU’s College of Nursing and College of Engineering and Computer Science launched two new combined programs in nursing and artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering. These programs equip graduates with the skills to leverage AI in addressing complex healthcare challenges.

Martins concluded by highlighting the promise of AI in driving positive change in healthcare while affirming the indispensable role of skilled nursing talent in effective healthcare delivery and outcomes.
