Generative AI Emerges as Top Investment Priority in Global Healthcare Industry

April 2024

In the rapidly evolving landscape of the global healthcare industry, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a pivotal trend, with generative AI capturing significant attention from industry leaders. According to the "2024 Global Health Industry Trends In-Depth Survey" released by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), global consulting firms anticipate generative AI to play a transformative role in healthcare this year.

Key findings from surveys conducted by prominent consulting firms underscore the growing prominence of generative AI within the healthcare sector. KPMG's survey of 118 life sciences CEOs revealed that 62 percent identified generative AI as a top investment priority for their organizations. Notably, improved profitability emerged as a primary advantage associated with the adoption of generative AI technologies.

Despite the optimism surrounding generative AI, concerns regarding the timeline for return on investment and ethical considerations persist. KPMG's survey indicated that 46 percent of respondents expected to see returns within three to five years, while 53 percent expressed apprehension regarding potential ethical issues and cyberattacks stemming from generative AI.

Deloitte's survey of 121 CEOs representing various healthcare entities further underscored the widespread anticipation surrounding the impact of generative AI. Over 90 percent of biopharmaceutical and medical technology respondents anticipated generative AI to influence their organizations in the current year. Deloitte highlighted generative AI as a key driver of digital transformation, particularly in areas such as care management and early disease detection.

Projections outlined in industry reports paint a promising picture of the potential benefits of generative AI adoption in healthcare. Deloitte forecasts significant cost savings, estimating that AI could save the U.S. healthcare system approximately $360 billion annually over the next five years, representing around 10 percent of total healthcare spending in the country.

Bain & Company's recent report highlighted the proactive stance of healthcare executives towards integrating generative AI into organizational strategies. Forty percent of executives have already incorporated anticipated cost savings from generative AI adoption into their 2024 budgets, with 60 percent setting targets to reduce costs or enhance productivity. Bain & Company emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI in healthcare, particularly in reducing administrative burdens and accelerating biomedical research and drug development.

The trajectory of the global AI healthcare market reflects the growing significance of generative AI. Forecasts indicate robust growth, with the market projected to expand at an average annual rate of 37 percent, reaching over $187.95 billion by 2030, up from $15.1 billion in 2022.

In conclusion, generative AI stands poised to revolutionize the healthcare industry, offering opportunities to enhance efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and drive cost savings. As organizations navigate the complexities of AI adoption, strategic identification and utilization of generative AI technologies will be imperative to capitalize on its transformative potential in healthcare.
